How would you describe the reason for creating art? Whether it be drawing, painting, sculpting or photographs, art often holds an underlying meaning that describes what it is about and describes a message the artist wants to portray to the viewer.

To understand the hidden messages in artwork, take the next opportunity to attend an art show. Recently, EMU hosted a photography exhibit featuring up-and-coming photographers Sarah Gingrich, Michelle Mitchell, and Meredith Wilson, all seniors here at EMU, that are highly devoted to portraying and displaying works of art.

“I am an artist,” said Wilson. “The camera is my tool for expression.” Wilson utilizes her love for photography to express her fascination with people as a work of God.

Artwork could also be a method of cultural diffusion, which is precisely what motivated Mitchell to display her extensive photo gallery during Friday’s show. Mitchell aimed to compare her home country of Lithuania to life here in the United States, her photographs featured a realistic but surreal style, which appealed to many enthusiastic art viewers.

Art is a multifaceted subject. It can be applied in leisure activity as well as entrepreneurship. Senior Photography major Sarah Gingrich successfully portrayed this message through her stellar collection of photography, in which she described her entrepreneurship in the field of photography. This event sparked the interest of a diverse audience, as it appealed to a greater sense of simplistic but surreal beauty that is art.
